Stephen Curry Confident Despite Warriors’ Silent Free Agency Start

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has broken his silence on the team’s quiet offseason, expressing full confidence in the front office despite the franchise being the only National Basketball Association (NBA) team yet to sign a free agent as of July 16. While the lack of movement has stirred some concern among fans, Curry believes the organization is taking a strategic approach to building a title-contending roster for the 2025–26 season.

Curry spoke candidly at the American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe, where he was competing in the celebrity golf tournament. In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole, the four-time NBA champion made it clear that communication with team executives remains strong and that he is fully aligned with their vision.

“We talk. We have communication,” Curry told Poole. “I know what’s going on to the point where I have a lot of confidence in our ability to put together a winning team next year. That’s all I want.”

Curry’s confidence is grounded in how the Warriors ended last season. After acquiring veteran forward Jimmy Butler III midway through the campaign, Golden State surged to a 23–8 record to close the regular season. With their chemistry clicking and momentum building, many expected a deep playoff run. However, Curry suffered a hamstring injury during the second-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, cutting their postseason hopes short.

Despite the disappointing ending, the 11-time All-Star sees plenty of reason for optimism. With a longer offseason than expected, the team has had more time to rest, recover, and prepare for another high-stakes run.

“Right now, everybody is taking advantage of an unfortunately longer offseason to get refreshed and rejuvenated, mentally and physically,” Curry said. “Our last 35 games and the playoffs felt like a full-on sprint.”

He also spoke enthusiastically about playing another season alongside Butler, calling their fit on the court seamless. “We know how to win, we know how to play, pieces fit,” Curry added. “We’ll commit to that and embrace the challenge of trying to climb the mountaintop again.”

Roster Moves

A major reason for the Warriors’ slow free agency start is the unresolved status of forward Jonathan Kuminga. The restricted free agent has attracted attention from multiple teams, but league-wide salary cap constraints have made it difficult for Golden State to pull off a sign-and-trade deal.

Additionally, the team is actively seeking a new starting center following Kevon Looney’s departure. The goal is to shift Draymond Green back to his natural role as a power forward. One name being linked to the Warriors is Al Horford, the former Boston Celtics star and five-time All-Star.

According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Curry is reportedly excited about the idea of Horford joining the squad. Still, landing Horford won’t be simple. According to ESPN’s Marc Spears, Golden State is competing with the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Atlanta Hawks, while Horford is also considering retirement.

“What’s going to happen with Horford? Golden State expected him to sign last week, he didn’t,” Spears said on ESPN’s “NBA Today” on July 14. “He’s still considering retiring, he’s not in any hurry.”

For now, the Warriors are playing the long game. And with Stephen Curry’s confidence at the helm, fans may just have reason to believe the team isn’t done making noise this summer.
