Murdered American Idol Exec Met with LAPD the Day Before Deadly Break-In

Just one day before she was brutally murdered in her own home, longtime American Idol music producer Robin Kaye met with Los Angeles police to plead for help amid rising crime in her Encino neighborhood, entertainment magazine People has learned.

Kaye, 70, and her husband, musician Thomas Deluca, were found shot to death inside their home on July 14, four days after the actual murders occurred. According to authorities, the couple was killed on the afternoon of July 10, mere hours after attending a public safety meeting with top LAPD officials to voice their growing fears about a spike in local break-ins.

Now, prosecutors say 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of burglary in connection with the slayings. Investigators believe he entered the home while the couple was away, lay in wait, and later used the couple’s own firearm to kill them when they returned.

Shockingly, police say Boodarian made a 911 call from inside the home, pretending to be a resident, shortly before the murders. Despite two emergency calls that day, one from the suspect and another from a neighbor, officers did not enter the residence. It wasn’t until a friend requested a welfare check days later that the bodies were discovered.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the time of death as approximately 4:14 p.m. on July 10. Kaye’s body was found in the pantry; Deluca’s was found in a bathroom. Their three pets were unharmed.

The case has triggered public outrage over the LAPD’s response, particularly given Kaye’s direct appeal to police just a day earlier. She had also recently recounted a previous break-in at a local council meeting, saying that she and Deluca had once awakened to an intruder in their home.

“This was brutal and heartbreaking,” said District Attorney Nathan Hochman during a July 21 town hall. “The victims died by their own gun, inside their own home, after asking for help.” Hochman vowed to prosecute the case to the “fullest extent of the law.”

The suspect, Boodarian, was arrested on July 15 and remains in custody without bail. His arraignment is set for August 20.

Former LAPD officer and private security consultant Kris Herzog criticized the department’s current policies, saying, “This isn’t the first time officers left a scene and came back to find murder victims. The system is critically under-resourced.”

The murders of Kaye and Deluca have reignited debate over police response protocols, LAPD staffing shortages, and the broader issue of safety in Los Angeles neighborhoods. “The government owes one thing: protection,” Hochman said. “Robin and Thomas were denied that promise.”
