Grandfather Taken into Custody After Infant Found Dead in Walmart Restroom

A grandfather in South Texas has been arrested, three days after a newborn baby was found deceased inside a restroom trash bag at a Walmart store in Kingsville. The incident has prompted a police investigation as authorities continue to piece together what led to the tragic discovery.

According to the Kingsville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Walmart located on East General Cavazos Boulevard at approximately 10:22 p.m. on Monday, July 14. The call came from a concerned employee who had found an unresponsive infant in a trash bag inside the store’s bathroom. Kingsville is located in Kleberg County, roughly 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi.

Walmart staff members were reportedly attempting life-saving measures when officers arrived on the scene. Investigator Celina Tatum, a spokesperson for the police department, told local station KRIS-TV that maintenance personnel had collected restroom trash and noticed something unusual in one of the bags. Upon closer inspection, they discovered the baby and immediately alerted others.

Emergency responders rushed the infant to Christus Spohn Hospital–Kleberg, where medical staff later pronounced the baby dead. Shortly afterward, a 17-year-old female believed to be the child’s mother returned to the store and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. Law enforcement officials have not released her identity, and as of now, it remains unclear whether she will face any criminal charges.

Kingsville Police Chief Ricardo Torres noted that surveillance footage showed the young woman entering the store and remaining in the restroom for approximately 40 minutes. The infant was discovered about half an hour after she had exited the premises. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities reviewing evidence and awaiting further interviews.

While details are still emerging, the case has already drawn significant local attention. It highlights the importance of family accountability and the role of adults in ensuring the well-being of children, especially in crises where support is often lacking or overlooked.
