A man from Grand Forks, North Dakota, was taken into custody late Wednesday night after reportedly breaking into a woman’s apartment and attempting to sexually assault her, according to law enforcement. The woman managed to escape and alert police, leading to the suspect’s arrest at the scene.

According to the Grand Forks Police Department (GFPD), officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Gateway Drive following a 911 call made by the victim. Initial reports from investigators indicate that the suspect, identified as Andrew Ebertowski, forced his way into a neighboring apartment and physically restrained the woman while making threatening sexual advances.

Police say Ebertowski grabbed the woman and stated he wanted to have sex with her, before shoving her against a kitchen counter. Thankfully, the woman managed to break free and fled the apartment, seeking refuge in a nearby unit where she contacted emergency services.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located Ebertowski still inside the victim’s residence. He was immediately taken into custody without further incident. Authorities confirmed that he is facing multiple serious charges, including burglary, terrorizing, felonious restraint, and attempted gross sexual imposition, the latter being North Dakota’s legal term for attempted sexual assault.

No injuries were reported, though officials acknowledged the traumatic nature of the incident. The woman’s quick response and decision to run for help likely prevented a more tragic outcome, police noted.

The Grand Forks Police Department stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Ebertowski is believed to have acted alone, and police are not seeking additional suspects in connection with this case.

Officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident, or who may have additional information, to contact the GFPD. Tips can be submitted by calling their non-emergency line or the department’s anonymous reporting services.

GFPD did not disclose any potential motive behind the alleged attack, and it remains unclear whether the suspect and the victim had any prior relationship beyond being neighbors. Court proceedings are expected to follow, and further charges may be considered as the investigation continues.

Cases like this raise ongoing concerns about safety in residential communities and the importance of swift action when potential threats arise. The GFPD has encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior, emphasizing that community involvement is critical in preventing crimes and ensuring public safety.

As of Thursday afternoon, Ebertowski remains in custody. Formal charges are expected to be filed by the Grand Forks County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with further information is urged to contact the Grand Forks Police Department at (701) 787-8000.
