Trump Pushes for Russia-Ukraine Peace Agreement by August 8, U.S. Tells U.N. Security Council

The United States has informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that President Donald Trump is pressing for a peace agreement to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine by August 8. The message, delivered by a senior American diplomat, underscores the administration’s renewed urgency to bring a halt to the war, now in its third year.

Speaking before the 15-member council on Thursday, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. John Kelley stated, “Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear that this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace.” Kelley did not elaborate on what those additional measures might entail, but the comment signaled Washington’s willingness to escalate diplomatic or economic efforts in pursuit of a resolution.

The war in Ukraine, which began in 2022 with Russia’s full-scale invasion, has led to tens of thousands of casualties, widespread destruction, and global economic consequences. While several rounds of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow have taken place in the past, none have resulted in a lasting agreement. The recent push by President Trump reflects a strategic effort to end the conflict ahead of the U.S. election season, with global stability and American foreign policy playing central roles.

The United States has remained a key backer of Ukraine throughout the war, providing military assistance and humanitarian aid. However, Trump’s administration has emphasized that a long-term military solution is not sustainable and has instead urged both parties to return to the negotiating table.

The August 8 deadline, though ambitious, indicates a shift in the U.S. stance toward a more direct, timeline-driven approach. Whether Moscow or Kyiv is prepared to meet this timeline remains uncertain. Russia has yet to issue a formal response, and Ukrainian leadership has previously insisted on the withdrawal of Russian troops as a condition for any serious peace discussions.

The United Nations, while not directly involved in negotiations, continues to serve as a platform for international dialogue on the crisis. Several members of the UNSC expressed cautious optimism at Thursday’s meeting, noting that renewed diplomatic momentum may be the most viable path forward after months of stalemate on the battlefield.

As the proposed deadline nears, international observers will be closely watching for signs of movement from both capitals. For now, the U.S. administration is making its position clear: the time for peace is now, and Washington expects results.
