U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a relatively common circulatory condition, following recent complaints of leg swelling. The White House confirmed the diagnosis after a series of vascular studies conducted at the presidential medical unit.

On Thursday, July 17, the White House issued a statement detailing the results of President Trump’s medical evaluation. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read from a note by Trump’s physician, Captain Sean Barbabella, who conducted the examination. According to the physician, bilateral Doppler ultrasound imaging of the president’s legs revealed signs of chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which the veins have trouble sending blood from the limbs back to the heart due to weakened valves.

The 79-year-old commander-in-chief underwent a comprehensive set of tests, including diagnostic vascular scans and an echocardiogram. The White House reported that there was no evidence of arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or heart failure. Additionally, laboratory results were within normal ranges, and no systemic illness or renal dysfunction was found.

Chronic venous insufficiency typically affects older adults and is often considered benign. It can cause symptoms such as swelling in the lower legs, varicose veins, leg pain, and changes in skin color or texture. Though the condition is manageable, it may require long-term monitoring and treatment, including compression therapy or minor procedures, especially in later stages.

Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency medicine professor at Harvard Medical School, commented that the president’s condition is not serious and is frequently seen in patients over 70. Cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby added that while the condition is largely non-threatening, it can sometimes be influenced by underlying health issues such as elevated vascular pressure or sleep-related breathing disorders.

The White House has not indicated any impact on the president’s ability to carry out his duties, and Trump is reportedly in stable condition. The update comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the president’s health, but medical professionals and officials alike have downplayed concerns, emphasizing that the diagnosis does not represent a significant risk.
