Tigers Get Boost as Reese Olson Nears Return From Injury

Detroit Tigers fans finally have some good news to cheer about. Manager AJ Hinch shared that right-handed pitcher Reese Olson is expected to come off the injured list soon, possibly as early as this Friday when the Tigers face the Cleveland Guardians.

Olson has been sidelined since mid-May with a finger injury that interrupted what was shaping up to be an impressive season. Before he went down, the 25-year-old starter had put together a strong 4-3 record with a sharp 2.96 earned run average (ERA) and 51 strikeouts. He looked poised to become a key piece of the Tigers’ rotation, and now he will have a chance to pick up right where he left off.

The path back to the big leagues has not been rushed. Olson took the time to build up his arm strength and confidence in Triple-A, where he threw 74 pitches over four innings during a recent rehab start. The outing went well enough that the Tigers feel comfortable easing him back into their starting mix in the coming days.

Olson’s return could not come at a better moment for a team that has dealt with its fair share of injuries. This week alone, outfielder Kerry Carpenter and right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long were both placed on the injured list, joining a growing list of sidelined Tigers. Starters Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe, and Jose Urquidy remain unavailable, leaving the rotation stretched thin.

Yet, despite all the setbacks, Detroit has managed to thrive. The Tigers own an American League-best 53-32 record and have been propelled by one of the most effective pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. As a group, Tigers pitchers have combined for a 3.44 ERA, ranking third in the league, and 1.18 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP), which is second-best.

Much of that success has been anchored by ace Tarik Skubal, who has emerged as a dependable leader on the mound. But with Olson on the verge of rejoining the rotation, Detroit will finally have a chance to regain some depth and stability.

Olson has spent all three professional seasons with the Tigers, compiling a 13-18 record and a 3.60 ERA. Though he’s still young, he’s proven to handle the pressure of pitching in the big leagues.

Every healthy arm matters as the Tigers continue their push for the playoffs. If Olson can stay on track and quickly return to form, his presence could make a significant difference.

For now, the team and its fans can look forward to seeing one of their promising starters back in action just in time to help keep Detroit near the top of the standings.
