Hundreds gathered in the Bronx to honor NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed during a mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower last Monday. The 36-year-old officer, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two, was posthumously promoted to Detective First Grade in a ceremony attended by law enforcement officials, community leaders, and elected representatives.

The fatal shooting occurred on July 28 at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise building that houses major firms including the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG. The attacker, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the building armed with an M4 rifle and opened fire before taking his own life on the 33rd floor.

Tamura left behind a handwritten note claiming the NFL was responsible for long-term brain damage he believed he suffered and asked that his brain be studied for signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Authorities suspect he intended to target the NFL offices but may have misdirected his path inside the building.

The attack resulted in four fatalities, including Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman, and building security officer Aland Etienne. Another individual remains in critical condition.

During Officer Islam’s funeral, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described him as a courageous officer who embodied the values of public service. Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul attended the service, both offering condolences and pledging support for Islam’s family.

In the wake of the attack, the NFL observed a moment of silence before its preseason Hall of Fame game and closed its New York offices temporarily. The league also offered remote work options and mental health support to employees. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell visited staff impacted by the shooting and called the incident “an attack on all of us.”

Security experts are now urging commercial landlords to strengthen building safety protocols. Measures under review include upgraded surveillance systems, improved emergency response procedures, and tighter access controls in high-profile buildings.

Authorities have confirmed that Tamura’s brain will be examined for signs of CTE, though results may take weeks. The incident has reignited conversations around mental health, veteran care, and gun safety in public workplaces.

As New York continues to grieve, the memory of Officer Islam remains a powerful symbol of service and sacrifice in the face of tragedy.
