SC Pastor, Ex-School Aide Arrested for Child Sex Abuse

A South Carolina pastor and former middle school employee is facing serious legal trouble after being arrested on charges of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy. Devin Carroll, a 22-year-old former Conway Middle School aide and pastor in Nakina, North Carolina, was arrested on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Horry County, South Carolina, on charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

According to Horry County Detention Center records, Carroll was booked on one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and was released on a $30,000 bond on Monday, July 7, 2025. The reported abuse was first brought to the authorities’ attention on May 29.

Carroll’s recent roles in the community are now under heavy scrutiny. Carroll served as an in-school suspension aide at Conway Middle School until he submitted his resignation on January 7, 2025, with it taking effect on June 7, 2025. Horry County Schools confirmed his employment history to local station WMBF-TV.

Carroll was listed as the pastor of Happy Home Baptist Church in Nakina, North Carolina, beginning May 26, 2024; the church’s website has since removed his information. The church has not stated the arrest and did not respond to inquiries for comment.

Court documents reviewed by news outlets, including WMBF-TV and WRAL-TV, outline that Carroll is accused of abusing a 13-year-old boy. Specific details about the incident have not been released by law enforcement, and the identity of the victim remains protected by standard policies for cases involving minors.

The case has drawn attention in both South Carolina and North Carolina communities where Carroll held trusted roles. With ties to both the church and the school system, many locals are reacting with shock and concern.

Law enforcement and the school district have not provided further comment, and the investigation appears to be ongoing. It remains unclear whether additional charges could be filed.

Carroll’s arrest serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding children in all environments, particularly those led by figures in positions of authority. As the legal process moves forward, many in the community are watching closely, awaiting further details and hoping for justice for the alleged victim.

This story is developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. USA TODAY does not identify victims in abuse cases to protect their privacy.
