A well-known cyclist and university student was tragically killed in San Francisco last weekend after trying to protect a woman and her two children from a man behaving aggressively. The suspect has now been charged with murder.

The victim, 28-year-old Colden Kimber, was waiting with his girlfriend for the K Ingleside Muni train on Ocean Avenue when he saw a man shouting threatening remarks at a nearby family. According to court records, the man yelled things like, “Oh, you think you are better than me,” and “You are scared of me.”

Kimber, described as a 6-foot-4 former hockey player and a well-known cyclist in the community, positioned himself near the family in case the situation escalated. The documents state that Kimber “decided to position himself… so should anything happen, (he) could intervene and protect those around him.”

While Kimber stood facing the approaching train, the attacker suddenly stabbed him in the neck without warning. The court filing described the stabbing as “completely and utterly unprovoked.” Kimber collapsed at the scene and later died from his injuries.

Friends and coworkers are grieving the loss of a man they describe as kind, positive, and deeply caring.

“It was so horrendous and shocking and he’s the last person I would ever expect something like that to happen to,” said Reuben Sawyer, a close friend of Colden Kimber.

Bradley Woehl, owner of American Cyclery, where Kimber worked for three years, spoke about the impact he had both at work and in life. “I’m going to miss him for his good nature and kind spirit. He truly lived an exemplary life and was a positive influence on me and my entire staff,” Woehl said.

Colden Kimber was pursuing a degree in kinesiology at San Francisco State University while working as a bike technician. His workbench, now empty, stands as a stark reminder of the void left behind. “He is totally irreplaceable as a worker and totally irreplaceable as a friend and person and someone who had a good influence in my life,” Woehl added.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office confirmed that a 29-year-old man has been charged with Kimber’s murder and is scheduled to be arraigned on August 14. Officials say the suspect had received a mental health evaluation the day before the stabbing, but the outcome of that assessment has not been disclosed.

Supervisor Chyanne Chen, who represents the Taraval District where the incident occurred, stated that the case is being followed closely. “Still under investigation. So, I’m following very closely with the San Francisco Police Department, SFMTA (San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency),” she said.

As the investigation continues, Kimber’s community is preparing to honor his memory with a memorial bike ride around the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park on September 7. His family has also opened a GoFundMe to help with related expenses and to celebrate his life.

Colden Kimber’s tragic death has left many searching for answers, and those closest to him continue to reflect on the selfless act that cost him his life. “We love him, and we miss him,” Woehl said.
