Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning women’s 100-meter world champion, was arrested last Sunday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following an alleged domestic incident involving her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman. Authorities booked the 25-year-old track star on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense.

According to a police report reviewed by The Associated Press, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor notified an officer of a disturbance between Richardson and Coleman at the airport. Surveillance footage captured Richardson reaching toward Coleman’s backpack and pulling it away. As Coleman attempted to move past her, Richardson reportedly blocked his path and caused him to be pushed into a nearby wall.

The footage also appeared to show Richardson throwing an object at Coleman during the exchange. Despite the physical interaction, police noted that Coleman chose not to press charges or participate further in the investigation.

“I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim,” the responding officer stated in the report.

Richardson was taken into custody and booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6:54 pm on July 27. She was released the following day at 1:13 pm.

The United States Track and Field (USATF) organization, which governs the sport in the U.S., released a brief statement acknowledging the arrest but refrained from further comment. “USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter,” the body said.

Despite the incident, Richardson appeared in a public competition later that week. On Thursday, she competed in the opening round of the women’s 100-meter event at the US Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. As the defending world champion, Richardson already holds an automatic qualification for the upcoming 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

Richardson rose to global fame with her gold medal victory at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. She also earned a silver medal at the Paris Games last summer, solidifying her status as one of the top sprinters in the world.

There have been no further updates from law enforcement or her legal team regarding the arrest. Given Richardson’s high profile and recent performances on the track, the case continues to draw public attention.
