Raytheon has introduced a new high-definition targeting system designed to improve the vision and responsiveness of U.S. Navy helicopters during missions. Called the MTS-A HD, or Multispectral Targeting System, A High Definition, the upgraded system is expected to enhance performance in a wide range of naval operations, from surveillance to precision targeting.

The system, developed by Raytheon under parent company RTX, was unveiled in late July and builds on technology already proven in combat. According to Bryan Rosselli, president of Advanced Products & Solutions at Raytheon, the MTS-A HD “provides aircrews with superior visual capability, allowing them to make faster and more informed decisions when it matters most.”

MTS-A HD is compatible with the current MTS systems used by over 400 U.S. Navy helicopters, including the MH-60R and MH-60S Seahawk. Its modular, open-architecture design allows for easy upgrades and integration, giving operators a cost-effective path to modernize existing equipment without replacing entire systems.

This latest variant delivers clearer imaging, more accurate tracking, and advanced target detection across multiple spectrums, including electro-optical and infrared, alongside features like electronic zoom, video tracking, and laser designation. All of these are housed in a compact, streamlined turret for ease of installation and field maintenance.

The new system is already drawing attention from international allies. Countries such as Australia, India, Denmark, South Korea, and several European nations have shown interest in adopting MTS-A HD for their maritime operations. Many are focused on the system’s potential for surveillance, versatility, and compatibility with their current platforms.

Raytheon’s previous MTS versions have logged nearly four million flight hours and are in service on platforms like the MQ-9 Reaper, MQ-1 Predator, and MH-60 Black Hawk. The company is also building on other recent milestones, such as its successful launch of a drone interceptor from a helicopter earlier this year, another leap forward in airborne defense capability.

For U.S. Navy crews operating in demanding environments, whether over open seas or near hostile zones, the improved clarity and reliability offered by MTS-A HD could prove vital. With its rollout underway, the system marks a significant step forward in keeping naval aviation adaptable, precise, and mission ready.
