QinetiQ U.S. has secured a $26 million subcontract from General Dynamics Electric Boat to develop and deliver advanced electrical and electromechanical systems for the U.S. Navy’s Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines. The contract covers the design, manufacturing, testing, and phased delivery of critical onboard components.

All systems will be built and assembled at QinetiQ U.S. facilities, with work scheduled to align with production timelines at Electric Boat’s shipyards. The equipment will support essential functions such as power distribution, sensor integration, and survivability, contributing to the Navy’s operational readiness and undersea capabilities.

QinetiQ U.S. President and CEO Tom Vecchiolla said the award reflects the Navy’s and Electric Boat’s trust in QinetiQ’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities. He noted that the systems will enhance the effectiveness of both submarine classes, supporting strategic deterrence and global naval operations.

The Virginia-class submarines are among the Navy’s most versatile attack platforms, used for intelligence gathering, special operations, and anti-submarine warfare. The Columbia-class submarines, currently under development, will replace the aging Ohio-class ballistic missile fleet and form the backbone of the United States’ sea-based nuclear deterrent for decades to come.

Under this agreement, QinetiQ will supply mission-critical components built to exacting specifications, reinforcing its role in supporting one of the most complex and strategically important defense programs in the world. This contract is also seen as an affirmation of QinetiQ’s secure status within the U.S. defense industrial base, operating under a Special Security Arrangement that ensures compliance with national security requirements despite its foreign ownership.

The subcontract award comes amid growing demand for advanced undersea capabilities. Electric Boat has received over $1 billion in recent contract adjustments this year alone to support the accelerated construction of Virginia-class submarines and to prepare for full-scale production of the Columbia-class fleet.

As the U.S. Navy looks to modernize and expand its underwater force, suppliers like QinetiQ play a critical role in delivering high-performance, reliable systems. This latest contract not only supports current submarine programs but also reinforces long-term national security priorities in an increasingly contested maritime environment.
