Police Investigate Manhattan Shooter’s Motive After 4 Killed in Office Tower

In the deadliest gun attack New York City has seen in 25 years, four people were killed Monday inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower after a lone gunman opened fire before taking his own life. The incident took place at a high-rise building on Park Avenue that houses several major firms, including the National Football League (NFL).

The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, had no prior criminal record and was previously involved in competitive football. A note recovered at the scene blamed the NFL for his condition and referenced Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease associated with repeated head trauma. According to Mayor Eric Adams, Tamura may have been seeking out the NFL offices directly but took the wrong elevator.

Among the victims was Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old off-duty police officer who had immigrated legally from Bangladesh and was working as a security guard. He is survived by his wife and two children, with a third on the way. Another victim, Wesley LePatner, was a senior executive at investment firm Blackstone. The NFL confirmed in an internal memo that one of its employees was also critically wounded.

Tamura’s note blamed the NFL for his condition, despite never playing professionally. The league has faced scrutiny in recent years over its handling of player health, particularly long-term neurological injuries linked to repeated head trauma. While Tamura’s exact medical history remains unconfirmed, the mention of CTE has again drawn attention to broader concerns surrounding the welfare of athletes in high-impact sports.

As of Tuesday, authorities have not offered further comment on Tamura’s motive beyond the contents of the note. The investigation remains ongoing.
