New Guyanese Political Party Pushes for U.S. Linkage

A newly formed political party in Guyana, still in the early stages of public introduction, is beginning to attract attention ahead of the country’s September elections with an idea that is as bold as it is controversial: formally aligning Guyana with the United States.

The party, called GoAMERICA, short for Guyanese on Accountability, Meritocracy, Equality, Reform, Inclusion, and Collaboration with America, was launched after months of consultations with Guyanese citizens at home and in the diaspora.

According to founding member Vishnu Bisram, the movement was created out of frustration with rising living costs, persistent political divisions, and growing fears over Venezuela’s territorial claims. “Guyana needs instant geographical protection from the existential territorial threats from [President Nicolás] Maduro,” the party stated.

At a recent press briefing, GoAMERICA representatives said the group does not have a single leader or defined hierarchy. Instead, decisions are made collectively. So far, the party has identified Sivdat Durjan as chairman but has not yet selected candidates for president or prime minister.

The party’s platform is built on several pillars: individual freedoms, constitutional reform, decentralization of power, and a major realignment of foreign relations. Among its proposals is replacing Guyana’s current constitution through a national referendum and establishing independent branches of government inspired by the U.S. system.

GoAMERICA also wants to distance Guyana from China, arguing that Chinese influence has harmed local businesses and society. Instead, the party suggests building a relationship with the United States similar to the status of U.S. territories like American Samoa or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The group believes that such a partnership could lower the cost of living by removing duties on imported food, vehicles, equipment, and healthcare products.

“Our goal is to put the people, not self-serving politicians, in charge of government,” a spokesperson said. The party plans to connect with voters through community meetings, door-to-door outreach, and small workshops. They also intend to run social media campaigns and distribute printed materials to share their ideas.

While GoAMERICA is open to joining a coalition government after the election, its leaders are skeptical about traditional pre-election deals. They emphasized that any partnership must help achieve its core mission of forging a formal bond with the United States.

Supporters argue that this vision is the only way to end decades of political gridlock and racial division. “A formal linkage with the U.S. can break that cycle,” the party said, adding they are confident President Donald Trump would support the plan.
