Michigan Man Killed After Firing on Texas U.S. Border Patrol Station

A 27-year-old man from Michigan was shot and killed early Monday after he opened fire with an assault rifle on a U.S. Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas. The incident, which unfolded just before dawn, left a McAllen police officer and a U.S. Department of Homeland Security employee injured.

Authorities identified the gunman as Ryan Louis Mosqueda. According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, Mosqueda arrived at the station just before 6 am and began firing dozens of rounds toward the building and the agents inside. Officers at the scene returned fire, fatally striking Mosqueda near the facility’s entrance.

Investigators found additional assault-style firearms and extra ammunition in Mosqueda’s Chevrolet car parked outside the station. Photographs from the scene showed the words “Cordis DIE” spray-painted on the side of the vehicle. The Latin phrase, meaning “Heart Day,” is also linked to a fictional revolutionary group in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II. However, police said this reference did not clarify Mosqueda’s motive.

In the hours before the shooting, Mosqueda had been reported missing from a home in Weslaco, about 18 miles east of McAllen. His father was stopped by police around 3:45 a.m. while searching for him and told officers that his son had mental health challenges, had not taken his medication, and was carrying firearms in his vehicle. Weslaco police identified Mosqueda’s license plate and issued an alert to other agencies.

The attack disrupted operations at nearby McAllen International Airport, where flights were delayed for several hours as law enforcement secured the area and searched for additional threats.

The facility targeted in the shooting houses special operations teams of the U.S. Border Patrol. While the incident has not been tied to any organized group, it highlights growing concerns over mental health crises and gun violence.

President Donald Trump’s administration has maintained a hardline stance on border security, often deploying federal resources to the southern border. Although officials have not indicated any political motive in this case, the shooting has drawn attention to the risks faced by agents and officers who work along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Both injured individuals are reported to be recovering. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to learn more about Mosqueda’s actions and background.
