Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls on Trump to Commute George Santos’ Prison Sentence

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is requesting that former President Donald Trump commute the seven-year prison sentence of ex-Rep. George Santos, calling it a “grave injustice” and an “abusive overreach” by the judiciary. Santos, who pleaded guilty in 2024 to multiple fraud charges, began serving his sentence on July 25.

Santos, the former Republican representative for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, was sentenced to 87 months in prison by US District Judge Joanna Seybert. He was also ordered to pay $373,888 in restitution and forfeit $205,073 linked to fraudulent activities. His guilty plea covered a range of offenses, including wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and submitting false claims for unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter shared Monday on the social media platform X, Greene urged the Office of the Pardon Attorney, part of the US Department of Justice (DOJ), to recommend a commutation of Santos’ sentence to President Trump. She addressed the letter to the Honorable Edward R. Martin Jr., the DOJ’s pardon attorney.

“A 7-year prison sentence for campaign-related charges is excessive, especially when Members of Congress who’ve done far worse still walk free,” Greene wrote. “George Santos has taken responsibility. He’s shown remorse. It’s time to correct this injustice. We must demand equal justice under the law!”

Greene acknowledged the seriousness of Santos’ conduct but suggested that political bias may be influencing who is prosecuted. She noted that her office spoke with a pastor familiar with Santos, who affirmed his remorse. Greene emphasized that while accountability is necessary, the current sentence is disproportionate compared to the treatment of other members of Congress who have faced no charges for more severe misconduct.

Prosecutors detailed a range of fraudulent actions by Santos. Alongside his campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, he falsified Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings to qualify for national Republican funding. This included inventing large contributions from family members and falsely reporting a $500,000 personal loan to his campaign despite having less than $8,000 in his bank accounts.

Santos also misused credit card data from donors, including elderly individuals with cognitive impairment, to fund personal and campaign expenses. According to the DOJ, he created a fake political fundraising company to solicit tens of thousands of dollars, much of which was spent on luxury clothing and personal items.

While employed at an investment firm during the COVID-19 pandemic, Santos fraudulently claimed more than $24,000 in unemployment assistance. He also submitted false financial disclosures to Congress and fabricated much of his background, including claims of elite education, Wall Street experience, and ties to Holocaust survivors and 9/11 victims.

Elected in 2022, Santos flipped a Democrat-held seat for the GOP but was expelled from the House in December 2023 after a damning ethics report, becoming just the sixth member in history to be removed from Congress.

Santos has since remained active online, including selling personalized video messages. Without intervention, he is expected to remain in federal prison until at least 2032. He has reportedly made a direct appeal for clemency to President Trump.

Greene and the Trump team have not yet responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
