Manhattan Shooting Leaves Four Dead, Including Officer, in Shocking Skyscraper Attack

A tragic mass shooting unfolded Monday evening in New York City, where a gunman killed four people—among them a police officer—before turning the weapon on himself.

The deadly rampage occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent office tower that houses major corporations, including the National Football League (NFL) and financial giant Blackstone.

Authorities identified the gunman as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura had a documented mental health history, though his motive remains unclear. Armed with an M4 rifle, Tamura stormed the building just before 6:30 p.m., beginning his assault in the lobby and working his way to the 33rd floor.

One woman was gunned down while seeking cover, and a police officer assigned to corporate security, along with two other men, was also shot. Tamura ultimately took his own life on the upper floor.

The officer killed was 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a New York City police officer with over three years on the force. Commissioner Tisch praised Islam’s bravery, stating: “He was doing the job we asked him to do. He died a hero.” Islam leaves behind two children, with a third on the way.

One man remains in critical condition, while four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing the building. The building’s ownership, Rudin Management, has no known ties to the gunman, nor does Tamura appear to have connections to the city’s real estate industry.

Law enforcement recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from Tamura’s vehicle, which had recently traveled cross-country. His route spanned from Nevada to New Jersey before reaching New York just hours before the attack.

The shocking incident has rattled Midtown Manhattan and reignited concerns over safety in densely populated commercial districts. Though New York’s homicide rate is trending lower overall this year, high-profile acts of violence—particularly near financial and corporate centres—have left many questioning whether enough is being done to deter lone-wolf threats.

As the investigation continues, security protocols at major corporate offices are expected to come under renewed scrutiny. While the city has made strides in reducing gun violence, Monday’s attack was a stark reminder that vigilance remains paramount.
