Man Dies After Fall from Whitney Museum in Manhattan

A 34-year-old man died Wednesday evening after falling from an elevated area of the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, according to officials. Emergency services pronounced the man dead at the scene on Gansevoort Street in Chelsea, where he was discovered with injuries consistent with a fall from height.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to the call just before 5:30 p.m. Authorities believe the man, whose identity has not been publicly released, died by suicide. Sources indicated he jumped from one of the museum’s outdoor spaces, which are known for their elevated views of the city.

The Whitney Museum confirmed the individual had been a visitor. In a public statement, a spokesperson for the institution said, “We are devastated that a visitor lost their life. Our thoughts are with their family and friends, and with our staff, visitors, and neighbors who were nearby when it occurred.” The statement also noted the museum is cooperating with authorities and will be operating on a delayed schedule the following day.

The incident remains under investigation. Museum officials and local law enforcement have not provided further details as of this time. The museum has outdoor areas that overlook the Meatpacking District and Hudson River, offering scenic but elevated vantage points accessible to the public.
