Lansing Rocked by Three Shootings in One Night

A violent wave of shootings has now left Lansing shaken, as police continue to investigate three separate incidents that unfolded in less than 10 hours across the city. The shootings, which include a homicide, a teenage girl wounded at a party, and an attempted robbery, all occurred from Saturday evening into early Sunday morning and have sparked new concerns about public safety.

According to the Lansing Police Department (LPD), the first shooting happened just before 7 p.m. near South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Pierce Road. A 26-year-old man was shot during what police say was an attempted robbery. Officers now confirm that two juveniles have been arrested and two firearms were recovered in the area.

South Lansing resident Chris Kallio says the recent violence has made him reconsider his own sense of security. “I’ve walked around all hours of the night and I feel pretty safe, but I’m going to have to take another look at that,” Kallio said. “I’m starting to see a little aggression everywhere.”

Community on Edge

Later that same night, shortly before 11 p.m., officers responded to the Carolina Flatz apartment complex on Risdale Avenue. A 15-year-old girl was shot during what LPD now describes as a large gathering or party. Two adults have been taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered.

“We saw a bunch of cop cars come racing in,” Kallio recalled. “They had that end of the street blocked off and the whole complex shut down.”

Sherita Turner, who lives in the Carolina Flatz apartments, says the shooting has left her feeling vulnerable. “It really makes me feel very unsafe because they’re shooting,” Turner said. “What if it would have hit one of the homes?”

Hours later, before 4 a.m. Sunday, the third shooting occurred at the Waverly Place Apartments on Wilson Avenue. A 36-year-old man was found shot in the parking lot. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. LPD has not yet made any arrests in the case, and the investigation remains ongoing.

When news crews arrived at the scene Sunday morning, some residents requested privacy and asked the media to leave the property. Their request was respected.

“This is getting out of hand,” said Turner. “They need to get it under control. Put the guns down. If you can’t duke it out, let it go.”

Police say all three shootings are active investigations. While arrests have been made in the first two incidents, the fatal shooting at Waverly Place remains unsolved.

LPD confirmed to local outlets that Mayor Andy Schor’s requests for a comment have gone unanswered. However, Lansing Police Commissioner Farhan Omar issued a direct and critical statement. “Last night’s violence is a direct outcome of Mayor Schor’s failure to lead,” Omar stated. He chose managing his image over protecting the community.”

Omar is now calling for urgent action, saying the city must treat this level of violence as an emergency and confront the root causes head-on.
