Gunman Opens Fire at Texas Border Patrol Facility

McAllen, Texas. In the quiet hours before dawn on Monday morning, chaos erupted outside a United States Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, when a heavily armed man opened fire with an assault rifle. The suspect, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, injured a local police officer before he was shot and killed by federal agents.

The shooting happened around 5:50 a.m., shaking the normally calm border city located just miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. According to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, Mosqueda fired dozens of rounds at both the building and the agents stationed there. In return, federal agents responded with force, fatally shooting the suspect and halting the attack.

Border Patrol Agent Ismael Garcia, who was shot in the knee. He is expected to recover. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the injury was caused by a bullet or shrapnel. Fortunately, no other officers or agents were hurt in the gunfire.

Police say Mosqueda was wearing a utility vest and carrying multiple weapons and backpacks when he arrived at the scene. After the shooting, law enforcement recovered significant amounts of ammunition and other equipment. Among the items discovered was a white two-door sedan with painted letters on the driver’s side door, possibly in Latin. Authorities are still trying to understand the meaning or significance of the writing.

“We don’t yet know what the words mean or if they have anything to do with his reason for being there,” Chief Rodriguez stated during a news briefing.

Mosqueda, originally linked to an address in Michigan, had been reported missing from a home in Weslaco, Texas, about 20 miles from McAllen, just over an hour before the shooting began. The circumstances of the missing person report have not been released, and investigators continue to look into Mosqueda’s movements and state of mind leading up to the attack.

There is no indication at this time that Mosqueda was working with anyone else. However, officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) now taking the lead.

“This is still very early in the process,” Rodriguez said. “We’re working closely with federal partners to understand how and why this happened.”

Officials have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The incident comes amid broader national conversations around immigration and border enforcement. While authorities have not linked the attack to any political motive, the timing has added weight to ongoing discussions about security at the southern border.

As investigators work to piece together the full story, one thing is clear: a quick response from law enforcement likely prevented a much greater tragedy.
