A tragic shooting unfolded Monday evening in Midtown Manhattan, where four people, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, lost their lives inside a Park Avenue office tower. Authorities say the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane D. Tamura from Las Vegas, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the incident began when Tamura exited a black BMW double-parked near the building and entered the lobby carrying an M4-style rifle. Surveillance footage showed the shooter opening fire almost immediately, fatally striking Officer Didarul Islam.

The shooter then targeted a woman taking cover behind a pillar and moved through the lobby, firing multiple rounds. A security guard hiding behind a desk was also shot and killed. Another man was wounded during the chaos and later told police at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital that he had been shot in the lobby.

Commissioner Tisch added that while waiting for an elevator, Tamura let a woman exit unharmed before taking the lift to the 33rd floor, home to offices belonging to real estate company Rudin Management. Once there, he continued firing as he walked the floor, ultimately killing another victim before taking his own life with a shot to the chest.

The scene outside quickly descended into confusion and fear. NYPD officers, along with Fire Department of New York (FDNY) crews, cordoned off the area, blocking multiple streets and urging the public to stay away. People in nearby buildings were instructed to shelter in place.

Jacob Stern, who works nearby, told CBS News New York, “The building personnel said, ‘Stay in place, there’s an active shooter, don’t leave, get away from the windows.’ Your adrenaline rushes, and you know, it’s pretty scary when the building says, ‘don’t go by the windows.'”

Many office workers and residents found themselves caught in the middle of the emergency response. The office tower, known for housing major tenants including the National Football League (NFL) and investment firm Blackstone, became the center of a massive police operation. Unaware of the situation, tourists were first seen asking passersby what had occurred and quickly leaving the area when told of the violence.

One man working in the building said he didn’t know what was happening. “I heard all these loud bangs, had no idea what it was… I turn around all these people are running,” he told CBS News New York. He added that co-workers later confirmed witnessing people being shot and police officers heading toward the elevators.

Even hours later, the impact of the incident lingered. Police helicopters continued to fly above the scene, and flashing lights from emergency vehicles illuminated the streets late into the night. Reports from The Associated Press (AP) described office workers being evacuated with their hands raised above their heads, a precautionary measure as law enforcement secured the area.

Nekeisha Lewis, dining nearby, told AP, “It felt like it was a quick two shots and then it was rapid fire.” She said she saw windows shatter and a man run from the building shouting, “Help, help. I’m shot.”

Kyle Marshall, 38, was working at a Morgan Stanley office nearby when he received a text message from his mother warning him of an active shooter. Speaking to Reuters, he said, “Then she texted me the address, and I was, like, ‘Oh my God. That’s right next door to my building.'”

While the motive behind Tamura’s deadly rampage remains under investigation, the rapid response by police likely prevented more casualties. Some in the area said the experience left them shaken but not deterred.

“After things calmed down,” one man named Kendall told CBS News, “you start to see just, just worry. It went from kind of frantic, ‘Are you safe?’ … and then it went straight to worry. And just hoping for the best.”

Authorities continue to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage as they work to piece together how and why the attack occurred. The NYPD also reviews internal procedures following the loss of one of its own in the line of duty.
