Elon Musk Forms New America Party to Challenge “One-Party System”

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of SpaceX and Tesla, has announced that he is launching his political party in the United States. Named the America Party, this new movement aims to take on what Musk describes as an entrenched “one-party system” that he believes is bankrupting the country.

The declaration comes after a very public falling-out between Musk and United States President Donald Trump. Once one of Trump’s strongest allies and his biggest political donor during the 2024 election, Musk had led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to slash federal spending and reduce government jobs. But tensions reached a breaking point when Trump pushed forward a massive domestic spending plan that Musk fiercely opposed.

Musk argues the bill, nicknamed the One Big Beautiful Bill, will add an estimated $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. He has called the legislation “debt slavery” and accused Republican lawmakers of betraying their promises to voters. In recent weeks, Musk has vowed to challenge every lawmaker who backed the bill, declaring, “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

On the Fourth of July, Musk posted a poll on X, the social media platform he owns, asking Americans whether they wanted to break away from the two-party system. More than 1.2 million people responded, and a clear majority supported the idea. Buoyed by this response, Musk announced the creation of the America Party the following day.

Musk has also started laying out a political strategy. He said he plans to concentrate on flipping just a few Senate seats and several House districts to build enough influence to become the deciding vote on critical legislation. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election every two years, while a third of the Senate faces voters every cycle.

The idea of a third party has drawn comparisons to Ross Perot, the billionaire businessman whose independent presidential run in 1992 split the Republican vote and helped elect Democrat Bill Clinton. Some observers are warning Musk could have a similar effect, unintentionally paving the way for a political outcome he opposes.

Meanwhile, Trump has not taken Musk’s rebellion lightly. After Musk blasted the spending bill, Trump hinted he might consider revoking federal funding from Musk’s businesses and even suggested he could be deported.

Despite these threats, Musk seems determined to press on. Whether the American Party will reshape American politics or simply become a footnote remains to be seen, but Musk has made it clear he intends to challenge the status quo.
