ABC News anchor David Muir paused his regular evening broadcast to deliver breaking coverage of a violent stabbing incident at a Walmart in Michigan. Eleven people were injured in the attack, which was stopped by quick-thinking civilians, including a man identified by witnesses as a United States Marine.

The incident occurred near Traverse City, Michigan, where a man armed with a folding knife assaulted multiple shoppers inside the store. According to police, 42-year-old Bradford James Gilley used a 3.5-inch blade to carry out the assault, leaving 11 individuals wounded. Authorities confirmed that all victims are expected to survive, though some remain hospitalized.

As World News Tonight aired live, ABC News correspondent Mola Lenghi provided on-the-ground coverage from the scene. Just before the broadcast briefly returned to the studio, viewers were shown security footage capturing the moment several bystanders intervened to disarm the attacker. Among them was Derrick Perry, a former United States Marine, who was seen drawing a firearm and ordering Gilley to drop his weapon.

“I didn’t think of anything other than trying to get him away from people and get him isolated,” Perry told ABC News in a pre-recorded interview. “I just wanted him to focus on me instead of everyone that was yelling and screaming in the background.”

Law enforcement arrested Gilley at the scene. He faces 11 counts of assault with intent to murder and one count of terrorism-related activity. He remains in custody without bond, and a preliminary court hearing is scheduled for next week.

Shortly after the live report, Muir transitioned back to national coverage, highlighting two new studies on Alzheimer’s disease prevention. The studies suggest that moderate exercise, improved nutrition, and regular cognitive engagement can significantly delay the onset of the disease, especially among those at elevated risk. Structured social activities were also cited as helpful in preserving mental sharpness in older adults.

The program concluded with a health segment on Deion Sanders, former National Football League (NFL) star and current college football coach, who discussed his health challenges and outlook on the future.Officials in Michigan have commended the bravery of Perry and other bystanders, crediting their actions with preventing further harm. Their response serves as a reminder of the importance of situational awareness and personal responsibility in emergencies.
