Congress Criticizes Modi Government’s Silence on U.S. Strikes in Iran, Urges Assertive Diplomatic Response

The Indian National Congress has strongly criticized the Modi government for its silence following the recent U.S. airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the lack of response a concern for departure from India’s longstanding tradition of principled, non-aligned diplomacy.

Congress General Secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions, stating that the decision to deploy American air power “makes a mockery” of Washington’s calls for sustained dialogue with Iran. “The Modi government has neither condemned the U.S. bombing nor spoken against Israel’s ongoing aggression, including targeted assassinations,” Ramesh said in a statement on social media platform X.

He further criticized the government for its silence on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling it “deafening” and suggesting that India’s inaction sends a troubling signal at a time when moral leadership is urgently needed. “This silence undermines our historical commitment to justice, peace, and diplomacy,” Ramesh noted.

The U.S. strikes targeted major Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, intensifying the Israel-Iran conflict and prompting global concerns about a potential regional escalation. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed “deep concern” to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a recent phone conversation and emphasized the importance of de-escalation through dialogue.

While acknowledging the Prime Minister’s outreach, Congress maintained that the government’s position lacks the necessary clarity and conviction. The party reiterated the urgent need for a proactive diplomatic initiative, asserting that India must go beyond neutral statements and take a firm stand in favor of peace and international law.

As geopolitical tensions rise in West Asia, the Congress party has urged the government to reclaim India’s voice on the world stage and reassert its role as a credible advocate for dialogue, de-escalation, and regional stability.
