Isle of Arran Named UK’s Top Hidden Gem for Staycation Seekers

Scotland’s “Miniature” Island Draws Praise for Natural Beauty, History, and Outdoor Adventure

A new ranking of the UK’s best staycation experiences has crowned Scotland’s Isle of Arran as the top destination for summer travellers looking to explore closer to home. Touted as one of the most overlooked regions in the British Isles, Arran earned top marks for its mix of unspoilt beaches, dramatic mountains, and rich cultural history, all without the crowds of more commercialised resorts.

The list was compiled by British travel writer Richard Madden in collaboration with Sykes Holiday Cottages, based on a survey of 2,000 adults. The standout recommendation: a scenic drive along the Arran Coastal Way, a 109-kilometre route that showcases the island’s rugged coastline, charming villages, and panoramic views of both sea and sky.

Nicknamed “Scotland in miniature,” the Isle of Arran compresses much of the nation’s iconic scenery into one accessible location. From its jagged peaks and sweeping glens to coastal ruins and Gaelic heritage sites, the island appeals to both history buffs and outdoors enthusiasts. The main town of Brodick serves as the gateway to the island and is home to Goatfell, the highest point on Arran, offering accessible hiking with rewarding summit views.

The island’s northern reaches, particularly around Lochranza, are well-suited for coastal walks, wildlife spotting, and visits to historic ruins. Here, visitors may catch glimpses of seals at low tide while enjoying picturesque paths near villages such as Pirnmill. Further south, the island’s beaches are especially captivating. Kildonan’s renowned “silver sands” beach stands out for its expansive views across to Pladda and its frequent sightings of local marine wildlife, making it a true coastal gem.

Lamlash and Strabane also offer peaceful coves and sandy stretches ideal for families or those seeking a quiet escape. Meanwhile, Kilmory beach, tucked away in a sheltered cove, remains a hidden treasure. Its white sands and views of Ailsa Craig only add to its allure.

Scotland’s reputation for dramatic natural beauty and deep historical roots is on full display throughout Arran. For holidaymakers seeking a break from city crowds without leaving the UK, this often-overlooked island is fast becoming a standout alternative. As domestic travel gains popularity, Arran’s low-key charm and wealth of outdoor experiences make it a destination worth discovering, especially for those craving authenticity and tranquillity.
