FBI Cracks Down on Switch ROM Piracy Site, Seizes Multiple Domains Linked to Illegal Game Downloads

In a sweeping crackdown on video game piracy, the FBI has taken down a number of high-traffic websites known for distributing illegal Nintendo Switch game files.

The most prominent among them, nsw2u, had become a go-to hub for pirated game downloads. According to the FBI’s official statement, the operation marks a serious effort to dismantle the digital black market, costing the gaming industry hundreds of millions in losses.

The FBI’s Atlanta Field Office led the investigation and confirmed the seizure of several domains involved in distributing pirated video game content. The list includes nsw2u.com, nswdl.com, game-2u.com, bigngame.com, ps4pkg.com, ps4pkg.net, and mgnetu.com. Anyone attempting to visit these websites is now redirected to a government notice declaring the domain seized by federal authorities.

The operation, which spanned over four years, uncovered extensive evidence showing that these websites regularly leaked major video game titles before their official release dates. From February 28 to May 28, 2025, over 3.2 million downloads were made through one of the most frequently used services hosted on these domains. Federal investigators estimate the total financial loss to be roughly $170 million during that period alone.

These sites didn’t just cater to the Nintendo Switch community. Several also hosted pirated content for other major consoles, including the PlayStation 4. Their widespread reach made them a major threat to intellectual property rights, and game developers were trying to protect their work.

International cooperation was key to the takedown. The FBI credited the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) for its role in the operation. FIOD, which specializes in tackling financial crimes, has been an essential partner in tracing servers and operators involved in digital piracy.

“The theft of intellectual property doesn’t just harm big companies,” said an FBI spokesperson. “It affects small developers, creative studios, and the entire ecosystem of people who work hard to bring games to life. These takedowns show we are serious about protecting that work.”

The announcement comes as video game publishers continue to push for stronger enforcement against online piracy. Leaks and unauthorized downloads have become an increasing concern for the industry, especially for developers who rely on strong early sales to recoup development costs and fund future projects.

Meanwhile, the agency hasn’t confirmed whether any arrests have been made yet.

This operation serves as a reminder that law enforcement is keeping pace even in the internet age, where illegal downloads can happen in seconds. With growing collaboration between international agencies, more actions like this are likely on the horizon.
