1 Dead, 1 Critical After Crash in South Kansas City

A tragic two-vehicle accident in south Kansas City resulted in one fatality and one person in critical condition Thursday afternoon, according to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD). The collision occurred at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Blue Ridge Boulevard around 4:41 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a silver Dodge Dakota was traveling southbound on Blue Ridge Boulevard when a green Subaru Forester entered the intersection from a stop sign on Eastern Avenue, causing a severe collision. The impact forced the Dodge to strike a curb and a metal light pole before overturning. The front-seat passenger in the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Officials confirmed neither occupant in the Dodge was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Meanwhile, the Subaru’s driver and rear-seat passenger escaped the accident without injuries, according to Sergeant Phillip DiMartino of the KCPD, who provided a news release about the incident.

 According to KCPD, this crash is Kansas City’s 30th traffic-related fatality of 2025, compared to 46 at the same point in 2024. Traffic safety remains a pressing issue, with many fatalities linked to failure to use seat belts and dangerous driving at intersections.
