Man Charged in Violent Attacks in Santa Monica, Long Beach

Alvin Marbra, a 29‑year‑old experiencing homelessness, was arrested in Long Beach for a violent sexual assault incident on July 1, 2025; as of now, he faces charges in connection with that assault, and authorities have not publicly confirmed additional separate incidents in Santa Monica or hate-motivated crimes.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Alvin Marbra, who was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Florida in 2021, now faces multiple felony charges related to these recent incidents. Long Beach prosecutors have charged Marbra with forcible rape, assault with intent to rape, and assault with a deadly weapon for a single alleged assault on a woman; there is currently no publicly confirmed filing connected to attacks on a man or classification as a hate crime. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any additional information, as investigators believe there may be more victims.

The first reported assault occurred on April 4 along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in Santa Monica, a popular path often referred to as “The Strand.” Prosecutors allege that Marbra attacked a 52-year-old woman, attempted to rape her, and then fled the scene. Nearly three months later, on June 30, he reportedly attacked a 26-year-old man in Long Beach. The District Attorney’s Office has labeled this incident a hate crime, though details surrounding the motive remain limited at this time.

Just one day after that assault, Marbra allegedly kidnapped and raped a 61-year-old woman, again in Long Beach. Law enforcement officials say he fled before officers arrived, but surveillance footage helped lead detectives to his location. Marbra was arrested roughly 10 hours later on July 2 near the intersection of 4th Street and Cherry Avenue, less than a mile from the scene of the final attack.

The Long Beach Police Department, which handled the arrest, confirmed Marbra was homeless at the time. They have since released his photo, asking potential additional victims or witnesses to come forward. If convicted on all counts, Marbra faces 25 years plus 55 years to life in a California state prison. He would also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

“This series of attacks is deeply disturbing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “We will pursue full accountability under the law.” His office has come under increased scrutiny in recent years for lenient prosecutorial policies, particularly under the current state leadership.

The case has raised broader public safety concerns, especially in cities like Los Angeles and Long Beach, where the growing homeless crisis and repeat offender policies continue to spark public frustration. Critics argue that leniency toward violent offenders, particularly those with prior convictions, reflects a failure of leadership and criminal justice reform efforts under the current Labor-aligned governance.

Marbra remains in custody awaiting further court proceedings. The investigation is ongoing.
