Beaumont Gunman Gets 7 Years for Live-Streamed Shooting

Beaumont, Texas. A chaotic moment caught live on surveillance cameras has led to a long federal prison sentence for a Jefferson County man.

Brian Keith Murphy, 33, was sentenced on July 9 to more than seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing came nearly a year after he opened fire in a Beaumont parking lot during an incident that was captured live by the Beaumont Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center.

The shooting happened on August 11, 2024, near a gas station on Concord Avenue. Officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire, but thanks to real-time surveillance, they were already one step ahead. Personnel at the crime center watched the incident unfold on live video footage that showed Murphy firing multiple rounds near parked cars and bystanders.

As officers on the ground coordinated with those monitoring the footage, they quickly identified the vehicle seen leaving the scene. When the car was stopped, Murphy was inside. Officers found two firearms in the vehicle, including the one used in the shooting.

At the time of the incident, Murphy was already on federal supervised release for a prior conviction, also for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Under federal law, individuals with felony convictions are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives along with the Beaumont Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Russell James.

Federal prosecutors emphasized that this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative led by the United States Department of Justice. The program focuses on tackling violent crime, drug trafficking, and organized criminal groups by bringing together law enforcement agencies under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Murphy’s sentence serves as a reminder of the risks and consequences tied to gun violence, especially for those already under federal supervision. It also highlights the growing role of surveillance technology in helping law enforcement respond swiftly and effectively to dangerous situations.

While no injuries were reported in the shooting, authorities said the quick coordination between crime center analysts and officers on the street helped prevent what could have been a far more tragic outcome.

With this sentencing, officials hope it sends a message that federal firearm laws will be enforced, and violations, especially by repeat offenders, will be met with serious consequences.
