Minnesota Senator Leaves Intensive Care After Deadly Attack

Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman is taking hopeful steps forward after surviving a brutal attack that shocked the state’s political community. Hoffman, a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, has been moved out of the intensive care unit and into a rehabilitation facility, where he is expected to spend several weeks recovering from severe injuries.

The senator was shot multiple times on June 14 when he confronted a man at his front door in Champlin, about 20 miles north of Minneapolis. The gunman falsely claimed to be a police officer before opening fire. Hoffman’s wife, Yvette, survived multiple gunshot wounds. She was released from the hospital five days after the attack.

Their daughter, Hope, acted quickly during the chaos, locking the door and calling 911 as the shooter fled. Her call helped investigators track the suspect, who had already targeted other Democratic leaders in the area.

Shortly after the incident at the Hoffmans’ home, the attacker reached the residence of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman. Tragically, both were killed before police could intervene.

Federal prosecutors have charged 57-year-old Vance Boelter of Green Isle, Minnesota, with multiple crimes, including stalking and murder. U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson described the crimes as “targeted political assassinations,” highlighting the deliberate nature of the attacks.

Family members shared a photo showing Senator Hoffman standing and giving a thumbs-up, a hopeful sign of his recovery journey. His spokesperson confirmed he will need several surgeries and intensive rehabilitation, but remains in good spirits.

The shocking events have left Minnesota lawmakers and residents reeling, but many are rallying around the victims’ families, offering support and prayers as they heal from the violence.
