India and the US Strengthen Energy and Strategic Ties During Jaishankar’s Visit to Washington

Washington, DC – July 2, 2025

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with top US officials this week to advance cooperation in clean energy, defense, and regional security. His visit highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries as they work together on shared priorities.

On Tuesday, Jaishankar held a key meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in Washington. They discussed India’s ongoing transition to cleaner energy and explored ways the United States can support India’s goals through technology and investment.

“A useful conversation with US @ENERGY Secretary Wright this evening,” Jaishankar posted on X. “Spoke about the energy transformation underway in India and opportunities for a deeper India-US energy partnership.”

India aims to expand renewable energy, improve energy storage, and develop green hydrogen to meet climate targets and provide reliable power to its people. US expertise in these areas could help accelerate India’s plans.

Earlier, Jaishankar met US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon. The two leaders agreed that defense cooperation is one of the strongest areas of the India-US relationship.

“Great to meet Secretary Hegseth,” Jaishankar wrote. “Had a productive conversation on advancing the India-US defense partnership, building on growing convergences of interests, capabilities, and responsibilities.”

The visit was at the invitation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and included participation in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The Quad brings together India, the US, Japan, and Australia to promote a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.

“Just finished a very productive meeting of Quad Foreign Ministers in Washington, DC,” Jaishankar shared. “Discussed how to make Quad more focused and impactful on today’s challenges and opportunities.”

On the sidelines, Jaishankar met Secretary Rubio to review progress in trade, security, technology, connectivity, energy, and people-to-people ties.

“A pleasure meeting US Secretary Rubio,” he posted. “Discussed our bilateral partnership and shared views on regional and global developments.”

Jaishankar also held talks with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. With Japan, discussions focused on preparations for the upcoming India-Japan Prime Ministerial Summit.

His meetings in Washington underscored India’s commitment to building strong partnerships that support growth, security, and innovation in the years ahead.
