Seven people were injured Saturday evening in a serious two-vehicle collision in rural Lee County, according to Iowa State Troopers.

The incident happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. when a Mitsubishi SUV traveling north on 240th Avenue allegedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign. The SUV entered the intersection with Highway 16, where it was struck by a Chrysler sedan traveling west. The force of the impact left both vehicles heavily damaged, with debris scattered across the roadway.

Troopers said two of the injured victims were airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for advanced medical care due to the severity of their injuries. The remaining five victims were transported by ambulance to local hospitals in the surrounding area. The exact conditions of the individuals involved have not been disclosed, and their names are being withheld pending notification of family members.

Emergency response was swift, with multiple agencies arriving at the scene, including local fire departments, paramedics, and law enforcement. Helicopter landing zones were set up nearby to expedite the airlifts. The roadway was temporarily closed in both directions for several hours as investigators worked to document the scene and clear the wreckage.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash remains under investigation. No official determination has been made regarding potential charges or citations. Authorities will be reviewing factors such as driver behavior, visibility conditions, and possible mechanical failures.

Rural intersections, like the one at 240th Avenue and Highway 16, are often considered high-risk locations for collisions. While traffic volumes are typically lower than in urban settings, higher travel speeds and the absence of traffic lights can make stop sign compliance critical. Law enforcement officials in Iowa have repeatedly warned about the dangers of failing to yield at these crossings.

Authorities are urging motorists in the area to remain cautious and alert, particularly at rural intersections. Drivers are advised to slow down, make complete stops, and check for approaching vehicles in all directions before proceeding.

The Iowa State Patrol is expected to release more details as the investigation progresses.
