44-Year-Old Woman Killed in Bronx Hit-and-Run

A 44-year-old woman was fatally struck by a reckless driver who fled the scene after hitting her while turning into a driveway in the Bronx on Wednesday night, police said.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of West 174th Street and Macombs Road in the Morris Heights neighborhood. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the driver of an SUV failed to stop while turning into a driveway on West 174th Street and struck the woman before speeding away.

Sources said the driver continued driving down a long driveway into a back parking lot after hitting the victim. The woman was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, approximately two miles from the crash site, where she was pronounced dead. Police have withheld her identity pending notification of family members.

The NYPD is actively searching for the suspect driver, who remains at large. No arrests have been made in connection with the case.

This deadly incident adds to a troubling pattern of hit-and-run crashes in New York City in recent weeks. Last month, two separate hit-and-run incidents in the Bronx and Brooklyn resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians and injuries to three others.

On July 20, a driver struck three women on a Bronx sidewalk shortly after engaging in a pre-dawn altercation with another group. Thankfully, all three women survived that crash.

Earlier in July, a driver fleeing police in Brooklyn struck two men crossing the street. Both men died as a result of the collision. Authorities later arrested the 23-year-old driver from Staten Island, who had no prior criminal record, at his home.

In late July, police apprehended another hit-and-run driver linked to a 2023 fatal crash in the Bronx. That driver allegedly struck and pinned a car wash employee with her vehicle in a parking lot before fleeing on foot. The victim, a 47-year-old man, was trapped between two vehicles until the driver escaped.

According to the NYPD, the driver abandoned her damaged car about a block from the crash scene after the collision and fled on foot.

The recent string of fatal and serious hit-and-run incidents has heightened concern among local officials and residents about road safety and driver accountability in New York City.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the latest deadly hit-and-run in Morris Heights to contact the NYPD immediately.

Police continue their investigation, and charges are expected once the suspect is apprehended.
