A deadly incident in Glenwood, Iowa, on Wednesday evening left two people dead and another critically injured after a shooting and explosion inside a residential home. Authorities say the situation is under control, with no ongoing threat to the public.

Law enforcement officers responded to the scene near 405 North Grove Street shortly after Mills County Emergency Management issued an emergency alert at around 7:50 pm. The alert warned residents to avoid the area due to an active law enforcement operation.

Glenwood Police, along with deputies from the Mills County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire and a house fire. Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen confirmed during a late-night press update that there had been gunshots before a fire broke out inside the home.

“There was some type of explosion in the house before the fire started,” Johansen stated, indicating the explosion may have triggered or intensified the fire.

Officials say one person is currently in custody as a “person of interest.” The names of the deceased, the injured individual, and the person detained have not yet been released pending family notification and further investigation.

The incident was initially treated as an active shooter situation. Police barricaded the neighborhood and established a perimeter around the home, while nearby residents were urged to stay clear of the area.

Neighbors told First Alert 6 that they heard a loud explosion and noted previous disputes in the neighborhood, suggesting a history of tension at the location. Police have confirmed past calls to the area, but did not elaborate on the nature of those incidents.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the violence and explosion. The DCI is assisting Glenwood Police in processing the scene and gathering evidence.

Meanwhile, confusion briefly spread to Atlantic, Iowa, where a separate law enforcement action led some to believe it was connected to the Glenwood case. Authorities in Atlantic clarified on social media that they were dealing with an unrelated arrest involving an individual with active warrants and that the situation was not linked to the events in Glenwood.

As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information to contact the Glenwood Police Department at 712-527-4844.

Authorities have not yet released any further details on the motive or whether charges have been filed. As the investigation progresses, more updates are expected.
