BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin presented what she described as an “economic war plan” during a town hall event held at the Boys and Girls Club in Benton Harbor on Monday evening, where dozens of residents gathered to hear her message.

Slotkin, who represents Michigan as a junior Democratic senator, outlined a strategy she says is focused on strengthening the country’s economic framework and addressing what she referred to as dysfunction within the federal government.

“I believe that if we take the time to think through a serious economic war plan, we can shift the conversation and stop being purely reactive,” Slotkin told attendees. “This gives us a path to be more strategic and proactive in addressing the country’s most pressing challenges.”

The senator did not release full details of the proposal at the town hall but indicated that it would involve policy changes aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign markets, and restructuring federal spending priorities. While she did not elaborate on specific legislation, she emphasised the importance of forward-looking economic planning.

Attendees included State Representative Joey Andrews of Michigan’s 38th District, who said he was not surprised by the strong turnout.

“It’s always encouraging to see local communities engaged,” Andrews said. “People are clearly frustrated by the lack of results from Washington. That frustration is being felt in small towns across Southwest Michigan.”

Slotkin’s remarks were met with a mix of interest and concern from community members. Several participants said they were eager to hear solutions to longstanding economic issues that have affected the region, including job losses, inflation, and rising costs for basic goods and services.

During a brief Q&A session, Slotkin took questions from the audience on a range of topics, including federal spending, infrastructure investment, and access to healthcare. While the senator did not address all concerns in detail, she assured residents that their input would shape her upcoming policy decisions.

The event in Benton Harbor is part of a wider series of town halls Slotkin has hosted across Michigan in recent months. Her goal, she says, is to gather input directly from constituents and incorporate their views into her legislative priorities.

Although Slotkin’s comments included references to past political opposition, the focus remained largely on outlining a forward-looking economic vision. Residents leaving the event expressed a desire for more transparency and follow-through on campaign promises, regardless of party affiliation.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, economic issues continue to dominate local and national conversations. Slotkin’s initiative is expected to feature prominently in any upcoming campaign discussions, particularly in regions such as Southwest Michigan, where economic concerns remain front and center.
