KA’ANAPALI, Hawaii — Firefighters on the Hawaiian island of Maui are working to contain a brush fire that broke out Monday afternoon in an area north of Lahaina, nearly two years after a wildfire disaster devastated the region. The fire, which is located near the old Sugar Cane Train warehouse above Ka’anapali, prompted immediate road closures and raised concerns given its proximity to areas still recovering from the deadly 2023 fires.

According to the Maui Emergency Management Agency, the brush fire began in an upland area near Honoapiʻilani Highway, a key coastal route in West Maui. In response, both directions of the highway were closed between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway to allow crews to combat the flames and ensure public safety. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area as smoke continues to impact visibility on the roadway.

In a public safety update posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the Maui County Fire Department reported that crews were making progress. “The fire is slowly being contained,” the department stated, though it did not specify the number of acres involved or the exact cause of the blaze.

The situation remains sensitive due to the location’s proximity to Lahaina, where wildfires in August 2023 caused catastrophic damage. That disaster, now ranked as the fifth deadliest wildfire in U.S. history, claimed the lives of over 100 people, razed thousands of homes and businesses, and left long-lasting scars on the community. The 2023 fire was widely criticized for slow emergency response times and inadequate evacuation protocols, prompting a reassessment of fire preparedness throughout the state.

While officials have not declared any evacuations for the current brush fire, they emphasized the importance of staying alert. Emergency management officials are monitoring wind conditions closely, as dry and gusty weather patterns in Hawaii’s summer season can quickly intensify wildfires.

Maui County has increased investments in fire mitigation and brush-clearing efforts since the Lahaina disaster, but concerns remain about how quickly fires can spread in overgrown or unmanaged land. West Maui’s terrain, combined with its popularity among tourists, makes prompt emergency response essential to prevent another tragedy.

Authorities have not reported any injuries or structural damage related to the Ka’anapali fire at this time. Fire crews are expected to remain on the scene into the evening as they work to extinguish hot spots and prevent further spread.

Residents and visitors are advised to follow official updates and road advisories as emergency crews continue their containment efforts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
