Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, was arrested in Los Angeles early Sunday morning, August 3, after police discovered a firearm during a traffic stop. The 33-year-old rapper was taken into custody on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the vehicle was pulled over in the early hours of the morning, with Soulja Boy identified as a passenger. Authorities have not disclosed the reason for the stop, who was behind the wheel, or what led to the search of the car. However, in a brief statement, the LAPD confirmed the arrest, stating, “A passenger was detained and police arrested DeAndre Cortez Way for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.”

As of now, Soulja Boy has not publicly responded to the arrest. The artist has a previous conviction from 2014 related to carrying a loaded weapon, which may have played a role in the current charge.

This latest development adds to a series of legal troubles for the “Crank That” rapper. Earlier in 2025, he was found liable in a civil court for rape and other related charges. The lawsuit, brought by an anonymous plaintiff, accused Soulja Boy of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. The jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, siding with her testimony over the course of the trial.

Following the verdict, Soulja Boy addressed the financial burden the case had placed on him. Speaking to Courtroom News Service, he stated, “This trial has taken a lot of my money. As far as lawyer bills. This whole trial’s been real costly,” explaining that he had missed out on career opportunities because of the lawsuit. He went on to assert his innocence, saying, “I want to make it clear that I’m innocent. I am committed to filing an appeal and fighting for the truth to be revealed.”

He also criticized the legal system’s handling of the case, particularly the anonymity granted to the accuser. “Keeping these individuals anonymous while I’m forced to face public scrutiny creates an unequal playing field. I believe this entire process has been tainted by a system that is not designed to protect the rights of the accused,” Soulja Boy said.

His legal representative echoed these concerns in a separate statement: “We maintain that the evidence does not support the verdict. It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial. Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case.”
