Trump and Carney Expected to Hold Trade Talks Following New U.S. Tariffs

Tensions between Canada and the United States have resurfaced in recent days following reports of potential new American tariffs on Canadian imports. However, confusion surrounding political roles and official statements has fueled misinformation.

Contrary to some claims circulating online, Mark Carney is not the Prime Minister of Canada. The country remains under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Carney, a former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has participated in economic discussions in recent years but does not hold elected office. There are currently no confirmed plans for Carney to engage directly with U.S. officials regarding trade policy.

Speculation about a possible conversation between former President Donald Trump and Carney has also been circulating. These reports are inaccurate. As of August 2025, President Joe Biden remains in office. While Trump has remained vocal on international trade issues, there is no verified information confirming he has imposed new tariffs on Canada or that any diplomatic meetings with Carney are scheduled.

Recent reports from CTV News indicated that the U.S. is considering or has imposed a 35 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports. However, details about which goods are affected or whether these products fall outside the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain unclear. The White House has not issued a formal statement confirming the tariff structure or timeline.

Some sources have linked the trade friction to ongoing concerns about fentanyl trafficking. The U.S. has expressed frustration with cross-border drug smuggling, citing the synthetic opioid crisis as a national security threat. However, attributing fentanyl import statistics to Mark Carney is unsubstantiated. Data on this issue typically comes from law enforcement agencies or official government representatives, not private individuals or advisors.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s current Minister of Finance, has not appeared on CBS News’ Face the Nation to discuss this issue, despite claims suggesting otherwise. Trade relations and international negotiations are primarily managed by Canada’s Minister of International Trade and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, not the Minister of Finance.

While U.S.–Canada relations have historically experienced occasional friction, both countries remain economically interdependent, and official sources have expressed continued interest in maintaining stable trade partnerships. At this time, no confirmed bilateral meetings or high-level calls have been scheduled between Canadian and U.S. leaders regarding new trade measures.

Until formal announcements are made by the U.S. administration or Canada’s federal government, any reports regarding tariffs, high-level meetings, or fentanyl-related accusations should be viewed cautiously and verified through primary sources.
