DARWIN, AUSTRALIA – The United States Army has deployed its Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) system to Australia for the first time, in a move strengthening America’s military posture in the Indo-Pacific region.

The LRHW deployment was carried out by the U.S. Army’s 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force as part of Talisman Sabre 25, the largest bilateral military exercise between the United States and Australia. The weapon system has been positioned in Australia’s Northern Territory, where it is undergoing testing in live operational conditions.

Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, said the deployment reflects the Army’s expanding global capabilities. “The deployment of the LRHW system to Australia marks a significant achievement… as it validates the Army’s ability to deploy, position, and exercise command and control of the system in a forward environment,” he stated.

The LRHW is a high-speed, long-range precision weapon capable of travelling at speeds exceeding Mach 5. Its manoeuvrability and speed make it difficult for opposing forces to detect and intercept, giving the U.S. military a substantial strategic advantage.

Colonel Wade Germann, Commander of the 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force, emphasised the broader regional implications. “This is a major milestone for the Army and demonstrates our ability to rapidly deploy and operate advanced capabilities in support of our allies and partners,” Germann said. “It showcases our commitment to Australia’s defence and reinforces our shared interests in regional security.”

The Talisman Sabre exercise is designed to improve operational coordination between U.S. and Australian forces. This latest deployment aligns with Washington’s efforts to deter threats and maintain security in the Indo-Pacific, amid growing regional tensions.

The U.S. Army’s ability to forward-deploy hypersonic weapons illustrates its commitment to rapid global response and technological superiority. It also reaffirms the importance of U.S.–Australia defence cooperation and continued investment in Indo-Pacific partnerships.
