A road rage encounter in Colorado Springs has turned deadly, and the suspect involved is now facing a murder charge following the victim’s death.

The Colorado Springs Police Department reported Friday evening that the man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash on Union Boulevard near Palmer Park Boulevard has passed away. The incident, which occurred on July 24, is being treated as a homicide.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Daniel Nations, was initially arrested on assault-related charges in connection with the hit-and-run. However, updated court records now show that Nations is facing a murder charge following the victim’s death. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the man who died.

According to investigators, the situation unfolded when two drivers became involved in a road rage altercation along Union Boulevard. At some point, one of the drivers exited their vehicle to confront the other. Police say that the driver was then struck by Nations, who allegedly used his vehicle to run over the victim before fleeing the scene.

This is not Nations’ first encounter with law enforcement. His criminal record stretches back years and includes several incidents in the region. In 2017, he was arrested for threatening hikers with a hatchet in the Mount Herman area near Palmer Lake. That case drew regional attention and highlighted Nations’ history of troubling behavior.

In that same year, Nations was also questioned by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in connection with the unsolved killing of Timothy Watkins. Watkins was found shot to death in the Mount Herman area, but despite being considered a person of interest at the time, Nations was never formally charged in the case. Watkins’ murder remains an open cold case.

Colorado Springs Police have not provided additional details about the current investigation or whether surveillance footage or witnesses have contributed to identifying Nations as the driver. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information related to the July 24 incident.

Nations remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward. The court has not disclosed further information regarding bail or a trial date.

The investigation into the fatal incident is ongoing. Police have stated that updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
