A dramatic police pursuit across multiple Massachusetts towns ended Thursday afternoon when a man allegedly hijacked a garbage truck and crashed it on a bridge following a series of chaotic incidents. Authorities confirmed the suspect was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot and subdued by police.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Admilson Vizcaino, first drew attention for erratic behavior at a gas station in Medford, a city northwest of Boston. According to police, Vizcaino then drove through several towns, including Stoneham and Billerica, before crashing a sport utility vehicle (SUV) outside the Encore Boston Harbor Hotel and Casino in Everett. Investigators said he then proceeded to hijack a garbage truck.

During the attempted hijacking, Middlesex County District Attorney (DA) Marian Ryan reported that Vizcaino, allegedly armed with a knife, tried to force the garbage truck driver out of the vehicle. “There’s a struggle that takes place in that door. The driver is in the seat. He is attempting to get him out and climb across him, still in possession of the knife, and the officer was able to extract the driver from the truck,” DA Ryan told reporters during a press briefing.

Law enforcement officers discharged their firearms multiple times at Vizcaino as he attempted to take control of the truck. He was also tasered during the confrontation. Despite being wounded, Vizcaino managed to drive the vehicle onto a nearby bridge, where he crashed moments later. Fortunately, both the driver and the passenger in the garbage truck were unharmed.

The Everett police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure pending a formal review.

Vizcaino now faces a lengthy list of charges, including four counts of attempted armed carjacking, two counts of armed carjacking, assault, armed assault with intent to rob, and multiple motor vehicle violations. His arraignment will be scheduled once his medical condition stabilizes.

Authorities continue to investigate the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
