A tragic and seemingly unprovoked attack in northwestern Arkansas has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man charged with two counts of capital murder. Clinton David Brink, 43, and his wife, Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were fatally stabbed on July 26 while hiking with their two young daughters at Devil’s Den State Park. Authorities say the attack appeared to be completely random, with no known connection between the victims and the suspect.

According to Arkansas State Police (ASP), Clinton Brink was attacked first, prompting his wife to rush their daughters, aged 7 and, to safety before returning to assist her husband. She was subsequently killed. The couple’s bravery in shielding their daughters has been praised by law enforcement, with Colonel Mike Hagar of ASP describing their actions as selfless and heroic. The two girls were unharmed and are now in the care of extended family.

The suspect, identified as Andrew James McGann, was arrested on July 30 at a barber shop in Springdale, Arkansas, following a day-long search. Investigators located him after releasing a composite sketch, aided by over 500 public tips. McGann’s DNA matched samples recovered at the crime scene, and he reportedly made incriminating statements during an interview with investigators. A knife was identified as the murder weapon.

McGann had recently relocated to Arkansas and was set to begin employment as a teacher with Springdale Public Schools in the upcoming academic year. However, the district confirmed that he had not yet begun work or interacted with students. Superintendent Jared Cleveland expressed condolences, stating the individual “had not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve.” Before moving to Arkansas, McGann had taught fifth grade at Spring Creek Elementary School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, during the 2023–2024 school year.

Washington County Prosecutor Brandon Carter confirmed that the state will pursue the death penalty if McGann is convicted. Under Arkansas law, a capital murder conviction can result in either the death sentence or life imprisonment without parole. The charges remain allegations, and McGann is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Authorities revealed that McGann was injured during the attack, which led to a blood trail that provided the DNA evidence used to identify him. The couple’s daughters, along with a witness at the park, were able to describe the suspect and his vehicle. Public cooperation, particularly concerning a black sedan spotted at the scene, was instrumental in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

The Brinks, parents of three daughters, had recently moved from South Dakota to Arkansas, where Clinton Brink had taken a job as a milk delivery driver. According to the Associated Press, they had also spent time living in Montana. Friends and acquaintances described the couple as generous and caring. One friend recalled that Cristen Brink had often provided childcare and meals for others in need.

The arraignment for McGann is scheduled for August 1, where he is expected to enter a plea. Prosecutors and state police say more information about the case will be released as the legal process continues.
