New York Man Sentenced to 18 Years for Subway Attack That Left Woman Maimed

A New York man has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison for a brutal act of violence that left his former girlfriend permanently disabled. Christian Valdez, 36, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder after shoving the woman into the path of an oncoming subway train in March 2024, resulting in the amputation of both her legs.

The incident occurred at the Fulton Street station in downtown Manhattan on the 2/3 train line. According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Valdez and his 29-year-old girlfriend were engaged in an argument on the subway platform when he pushed her onto the tracks as a train approached. The woman was found beneath the train by responding officers and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors were forced to amputate both her legs due to the severity of the injuries. She also suffered broken ribs and a blood clot in her lung.

Valdez fled the scene and crossed state lines into New Jersey but was arrested hours later after returning to New York City. Prosecutors noted that he was wearing the same clothes he had on during the assault. According to ABC7 New York, Valdez was on parole for unrelated offenses at the time of the attack.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. described the assault as a “life-threatening act of domestic violence in our transit system.” He added, “As a result of this extremely serious attack, the victim has permanent physical injuries and experiences emotional trauma. I hope the resolution of this case offers her some sense of justice.”

The case has drawn attention to rising concerns about violent crime within public transit systems, especially in major cities like New York. While the court has now issued a lengthy sentence, the devastating impact of this crime will be felt for years by the victim, who now faces a lifetime of recovery and adjustment.
