Trump Administration Presses for Epstein and Maxwell Grand Jury Transcripts to Be Unsealed

The Trump administration is pushing for the release of grand jury testimony involving Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, arguing that the high level of public interest justifies making the material available. The legal request follows ongoing pressure over the lack of transparency surrounding the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) handling of Epstein’s criminal history and associates.

In court filings submitted Tuesday night, federal prosecutors stated that releasing the grand jury transcripts used to indict Epstein and Maxwell on sex trafficking charges would be appropriate. The request, filed with U.S. District Judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer in Manhattan, cites widespread public interest and seeks to ease growing frustration surrounding sealed DOJ records tied to the late financier and his convicted associate.

Donald Trump had previously pledged to make Epstein-related files public if re-elected and criticized political opponents for allegedly concealing damaging information. The DOJ recently stated that no formal “Epstein client list” exists, a revelation that sparked backlash from several of Trump’s supporters, who remain skeptical about the official narrative.

Grand jury proceedings are typically kept confidential, with few exceptions. Prosecutors clarified that only one Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent testified in Epstein’s case, and both an FBI agent and a New York Police Department (NYPD) detective testified before the grand jury in Maxwell’s case. This limits the potential for significant revelations, even if the records are unsealed.

Maxwell, a British national and longtime associate of Epstein, is currently serving a 20-year sentence in Florida following her 2021 conviction. She has filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the verdict. Her trial featured public testimony from several individuals, including alleged victims and law enforcement personnel.

Trump’s call for transparency comes amid broader political pressure. Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have also demanded access to DOJ records related to Epstein. However, Schumer noted that the release of grand jury transcripts specifically would require litigation.

A separate attempt to unseal older grand jury records from Florida investigations in 2005 and 2007 was denied last week by U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenberg. The judge concluded that the request did not meet the legal threshold required to disclose such materials.

The outcome of the Trump administration’s latest legal push remains uncertain, but it underscores continued public demand for answers in one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent memory.
