Adams Urges Tougher Gun Laws Following Deadly Manhattan Shooting

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is calling for stronger national gun control measures after a tragic shooting at a Manhattan office building left four people dead and another in critical condition.

The incident, which unfolded Monday at 345 Park Avenue, appeared to be a targeted attack involving a heavily armed gunman who traveled from Nevada. Authorities say the building houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), which may have been the intended location of the assault.

Speaking to ABC News, Adams stressed that thoughts and prayers are not enough after such events. “The response to shooters of this magnitude, mass shooters, cannot be vigils. It must be legislation,” he said, pressing for policy changes to address mass shootings.

Fatal Office Rampage

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, Nevada, was found dead from a self-inflicted chest wound. New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Tamura had documented mental health struggles, though a clear motive has not yet been confirmed.

Mayor Adams said investigators are reviewing a note left by the shooter referencing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease often linked to repeated head injuries. Some reports suggest Tamura blamed the NFL for his condition. “We’re looking at his note that talked about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) … but it is far from conclusive,” Adams told ABC.

Security footage captured Tamura entering the building armed with an M4-style rifle. According to the mayor, his calm, calculated movements reflected a chilling indifference to human life.

Among the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old from Bangladesh. He was a husband and father of two, with a third child. In a show of respect, Mayor Adams ordered flags on city buildings lowered to half-staff.

President Donald Trump has also issued a statement offering condolences, writing, “My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Trump also personally called Mayor Adams to express sympathy and praised the police response.

A fifth person wounded in the attack remains hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities have not yet released the names of the other victims.
