A fatal shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening claimed the lives of four people, including a New York City police officer, after a gunman mistakenly targeted the wrong office in a Park Avenue skyscraper. Authorities say the suspect, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, intended to reach the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) but instead entered a different office within the same building.

Tamura, armed with an assault-style rifle, opened fire in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue before heading to the 33rd floor. He reportedly entered the office of Rudin Management Company rather than the NFL, having taken the wrong elevator. Police believe Tamura, who drove from Las Vegas to New York, blamed the NFL for his mental health struggles, referencing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in a note found on his body. CTE is a brain disease associated with repeated head trauma, commonly found in contact sport athletes. Tamura played football as a teenager but did not compete at the professional level.

Among the deceased was 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a New York City police officer working as a security guard at the building. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was praised for his bravery in confronting the attacker. “He was doing what he does best… saving lives,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams during a press conference. “He was protecting New Yorkers.” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch added, “He made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Three others were killed in the attack: Wesley LePatner, an employee of investment firm Blackstone, and two male civilians. Blackstone issued a statement describing LePatner as “brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected.” One NFL employee was also seriously injured, according to a message from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The incident caused widespread panic in the Midtown area, located just blocks from Times Square. Emergency responders flooded the scene as civilians fled the building. One eyewitness, Nekeisha Lewis, described the chaos to NBC News: “It felt like you were in a warzone almost. Literally the most scary situation I’ve ever been in.”

Tamura ultimately turned the weapon on himself, dying at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement continues to investigate the shooter’s motives and timeline, but officials confirmed that the attack appeared to be planned and targeted, despite the location error.
