Justice Department Files Misconduct Complaint Against Judge Over Deportation Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has delivered a series of rulings this term that significantly strengthen presidential authority, with clear benefits for  President Donald Trump. The decisions mark a sharp shift in the balance of power, with the conservative majority showing consistent support for the executive branch, even in highly controversial cases.

In one of the most consequential moves, the Court ruled 6–3 to limit the ability of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions. Under the new standard, courts can no longer block federal policies for the entire country, only for the individuals or groups directly involved in a lawsuit. Supporters argue this brings courts back to their proper role and reins in judicial overreach. Critics, however, warn it gives the executive branch a freer hand with limited oversight.

Over the past year, the Court has also fast-tracked several decisions that allowed the Trump administration to implement key policies. These included an executive order targeting birthright citizenship, mass layoffs within the Department of Education, and the removal of Democratic members from labor boards. Many of these actions were upheld through emergency orders, often without full hearings or written opinions.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a member of the Court’s liberal wing, has raised sharp concerns about this trend. In her dissenting opinions, she warned that the Court’s deference to Trump risks eroding its credibility. “We are failing in our duty to act as a check,” she wrote in one case, calling the pattern troubling.

Despite the criticism, recent polls show growing approval of the Supreme Court among Republican and independent voters, particularly since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Still, nearly four in ten Americans believe the Court now wields too much power, raising concerns that it is becoming increasingly partisan.

Conservative legal voices, however, argue that the Court is restoring balance. By limiting the power of lower courts to block federal action on a broad scale, they believe the justices are reinforcing the constitutional structure of government, where the president governs, and the courts interpret, not interfere.

As the 2024 election approaches, the Supreme Court’s role in defining the limits of presidential power is under intense scrutiny. For now, the message is clear: the Court is giving the executive branch more room to act, and Trump is wasting no time using that space to reshape policy on his terms.
