Estonia Extends Belarus Sanctions Over Rights Abuses

Estonia has extended its sanctions against members of the Belarusian government, citing ongoing human rights violations and political repression under President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

The Estonian government confirmed this week that the entry ban on 273 individuals linked to the Belarusian leadership will remain in effect indefinitely. These sanctions were first introduced following Belarus’s violent crackdown on opposition protests after the 2020 presidential election.

Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna, stated that the Belarusian government continues to demonstrate systematic violence and disregard for civil liberties. He noted the regime’s role in supporting aggression against Ukraine as an additional factor in the decision to maintain sanctions.

“The situation in Belarus has not changed, and it is justified to continue applying the entry ban to the sanctioned individuals,” Tsahkna said on Thursday, emphasizing that the move is in line with Estonia’s longstanding commitment to upholding democratic values and regional stability.

The regulation, initially enacted in 2020, prohibits sanctioned individuals from entering Estonia. According to officials, the policy will remain active until there is measurable progress in Belarus regarding human rights and democratic reform.

A complete list of sanctioned individuals remains publicly accessible through Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
